Russell and Wittgenstein

Call for papers

In October 1911, Ludwig Wittgenstein turned up unexpectedly at Bertrand Russell’s rooms in Trinity College. He had come to introduce himself as a new Cambridge student who, following Frege’s advice, had registered for Russell’s courses. This encounter turned out to be decisive, as much for the career of both philosophers as for the future development of analytic philosophy and its relation to other philosophical schools. In the beginning, Russell acted as Wittgenstein’s mentor; indeed, without such ideas as logical atomism the Tractatus would not be intelligible. But soon there emerged disagreements between them: Wittgenstein’s difficult character, his criticism of Russell’s theory of judgement and theory of types (to mention but a couple of examples), and his “mystical turn” from 1914 onwards, not only surprised and disturbed Russell, but also intimidated him to such an extent that from 1920, Russell’s work practically disregarded the topics which had occupied him – and where he had excelled – during the first two decades of the 20th century. Furthermore, what have been called “the two souls” of analytic philosophy, particularly noticeable in the clashes that pervade contemporary debates in analytic philosophy between constructive and “quietist” approaches, or naturalism and anti-naturalism and also among different views of the relationship between philosophy and science, are basically the continuation of the clash of views resulting from their encounter in Cambridge in 1911.
